Circulatory System Notes
· The heart weighs about 11 ounces and is the size of your fist
· When the heart pumps, it forces blood under pressure through vessels called, Arteries, causing the artery walls to stretch with each heart beat.
· Arteries carry oxygen rich blood away from your heart to your organs
· The heart has two pumps, the right side and the left
· There are 3 kinds of blood vessels: Arteries, Veins, Capillaries
· Veins carry oxygen poor blood cells with carbon dioxide to the lungs
· Capillaries connect the smallest arteries with the smallest veins
· Blood is made up of fluid called Plasma
· Plasma- red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

Nervous System Quiz Study Guide
Nervous System Quiz Notes
The nervous system sends messages to the brain
Messages are sent in a form of Electrical Impulses
The brain controls how the body acts and moves
The nervous system is made up of small cells called neurons
There are 100 billion neurons
The brain is the central or main organ
Spinal cord is protected by vertebrae

Nervous System Notes
What do each of these lobes do?
- Frontal Lobe- associated with reasoning, planning, parts of speech, movement, emotions, and problem solving
- Parietal Lobe- associated with movement, orientation, recognition, perception of stimuli
- Occipital Lobe- associated with visual processing
- Temporal Lobe- associated with perception and recognition of auditory stimuli, memory, and speech
- Cerebellum- The cerebellum, or "little brain", is similar to the cerebrum in that it has two hemispheres and has a highly folded surface or cortex. This structure is associated with regulation and coordination of movement, posture, and balance.
- Basal Ganglia- is where the Thalamus is located, which controls body temperature
- Spinal Cord- Supports the bundle of nerve tissue that travels down the spin
- Brain Stem/ Medulla- responsible for basic vital life functions such as breathing, heartbeat, and blood pressure. Scientists say that this is the "simplest" part of human brains because animals' entire brains, such as reptiles (who appear early on the evolutionary scale) resemble our brain stem
- Stimuli- anything that your senses can detect or precieve.
- If your child can master the information on this video, they will be prepared for next Wednesday's quiz.-http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/human-body/nervous-system.htm

Tastebuds Study Guide
Taste buds are sensory organs that are found on your tongue.
Microvilli- are microscopic hairs ( mye-kro-vih-lye). Those tiny hairs send messages to the brain about how something tastes, so you know if it's sweet, sour, bitter, or salty.
The average person has about 10,000 taste buds and they're replaced every 2 weeks or so. But as a person ages, some of those taste cells don't get replaced. An older person may only have 5,000 working taste buds. That's why certain foods may taste stronger to you than they do to adults. Smoking also can reduce the number of taste buds a person has.
Olfactory (ahl-fak-tuh-ree) receptors inside the uppermost part of the nose contain special cells that help you smell. They send messages to the brain. Here's how it works: While you're chewing, the food releases chemicals that immediately travel up into your nose. These chemicals trigger the olfactory receptors inside the nose. They work together with your taste buds to create the true flavor of that yummy slice of pizza by telling the brain all about it!
When you have a cold or allergies, and your nose is stuffy, you might notice that your food doesn't seem to have much flavor. That's because the upper part of your nose isn't clear to receive the chemicals that trigger the olfactory receptors (that inform the brain and create the sensation of flavor).
frenulum (fren-yuh-lum). This is a membrane (a thin layer of tissue) that connects your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. In fact, the whole base of your tongue is firmly anchored to the bottom of your mouth, so you could never swallow your tongue even if you tried!

Wednesday
Parents and Students,
The students do not have homework tonight. However, if your child is in my math class, I gave them 6 division problems to work out. They can work them out the new way (partial quotients) or the old way. I did not send home weekly progress reports for math today because I felt the students needed me to delay their division quiz. I will be giving it tomorrow.

Weekend News
Hello Parents,
It is Friday!!! The students did such a great job putting together their aquariums and terrariums for their little critters. As I am typing this letter, two crickets have escaped and one made his way into the aquarium. All of the mosquito fish just looked at the helpless cricket as his head was just above the water level. But, thankfully my children were here to save him!
Make sure you take a look at the vocabulary and spelling words for next week. There will be a test on Ecosystems on Tuesday. I encourage the students to bring home their science notebook so that they will have the best advantage in getting high marks on the test.
Please bring in empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls for we will be making squid and octopuses next week. Someone told me that we may have a special visit from real live octopuses and squid!!! Hummmm.. I guess we will see what may happen!!!!
Progress reports go out next Friday and graded work goes home on Monday.
Please make sure you send back the weekly progress report next week if your child receives one. This is my way of making sure that you know how your child is doing in my class academically and behaviorally.
Finally, we need more snacks. Mrs. Strickland was kind enough to send snacks two weeks ago, but they have run out. If you have time and or money :), please send in a few snacks for some needy children. I thank you for being a partner with my in helping your child succeed in school.

Hello Parents and Students,
We had a wonderful day working on our Ecosystem Posters! Pictures will be posted by Friday evening. If your child did not return all the signed documents, I sent home an extra copy of what they needed. Please return it tomorrow and have your electric bill right along with it (that's if you have not sent it in yet). Don't forget the scholastic news paper payment of $5.00. This will get your child a whole school year subscription. So, please have that in by this Friday as well.
Home work- There is no homework for tonight. However, I did assign Thursday night's homework. Reading pwb page 1 and Language Arts sheet 2.
Thanks for all that you do in supporting your child.

Crazy About Science!
Hello Parents and Students,
We had a day filled with learning and exploring different types of Ecosystems. Each group was assigned an ecosystem where they had to research the climate conditions, habitats, and regional location. They were given a set of animal cards that had a variety of animals that can live in only certain ecosystems. As they collaborated in drawing and researching, I was amazed at how creative and resourceful they were...they are young scientists, exploring the world in which they live. Keep up the good work in encouraging them to do their best in school.
Homework- Language Arts sheet page 1
Math- (only Brown's Math) Skills sheet 1
If you have not sent in a power bill for a proof of residence, please send it to the office by Friday. Thank you!

Second Day!!!
Hello Parents and Students,
We made it through our second day of school...wheww and had a lot of fun! There were about three more students who introduced themselves through showing awesome and neat pictures of their scrapbook sheet.
If you have not already returned your child’s forms, please do so by Friday.
Science
We began writing in our science notebook! We are starting off on Biomes of the world. Your child learned all the six major biomes and played a charade game for reinforcement. Tomorrow, we will be learning about ecosystems, communities, and population. Depending on how fast we move, we may have our biomes test by August 31! We'll see.
Don't forget to bring in 2 liter bottles for our terrariums! Thank you!
Homework for tonight- draw and color the solar system. Remember the order- sun, mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and no Pluto :(

Welcome To Mrs. Brown's 5th Grade Class!!!!
Hello Parents and Students,
We had such and awesome first day of school! I really enjoyed having the students talk about their interest in music, sports, and other recreational hobbies. One of the most bizarre hobbies was the knife and bumble bee collection...pretty cool. Tomorrow, we will get right into doing our daily procedures such as morning work, vocabulary and spelling words, and the introduction to science (my favorite subject).
Your child should have come home with a lot of papers for you to sign, date, and return back to school tomorrow. If you cannot for any reason get them back into me tomorrow, please feel free to get them to me by Friday. Also, if you did not visit during Open House last Thursday, your child missed out on getting their scrapbook activity in. I sent home the scrapbook paper inside of a large plastic bag, and it will be due by Friday.
Finally, I will need for the students to bring in three plastic bottles washed and please remove the wrapping for we will start our lesson on Ecosystems tomorrow.
I look forward to working with you this year as we both help your child reach higher heights.
