End of the Year Newsletter

Here are some things that we need to consider for this upcoming May:
-May 3- Please bring in snacks in bulk for students. We will be testing from May 6 to May 10 in the morning. I will send home a list of drinks and snacks on the newsletter. Please fill it out and return.
-Get Plenty of rest this upcoming weekend. All students need to be here on time and ready to go. Testing starts at 8:30.
-May 3- Fun Day Money Due. Last Day- Last vocabulary test.
-May 6- Science Assessment
-May 7-8- ARMT Reading
-May 9-10- ARMT Math
-May 13- Extra Credit science projects due. Your child can do a science project on anything that we learn this year an beyond. They will earn extra credit towards their science grade.
-May 14- ARMT makeup testing
-May 15 - AR deadline
-May 16- DMS/HMS trip @9:00, AR Party
-May 17- Field Day- We need two coolers. If you have one that I could borrow, that would be super!
-May 21- 5th Grade Talent show
-May 22- Recognition practice at Shelton State and 5th grade Fun Day.
-May 23- Half Day-Recognition Day- Please send child to school on normal time in their Sunday's best. Parents please be there by 8:05 to get a good seat
-May 24-Half Day- Last Day- Report Cards go out on last day. Please send in a self address stamped envelope if your child will not attend the last day. I will mail the report card to you.

April 15 News

Ok Parents and Students,

Math homework is green book page 551, 2-13. All you need to do is add up all of the sides to get the perimeter of the shape. Don't forget to write it in units.

I sent home a letter from the County Board informing the parents about my upcoming HIV AIDS lesson. If you have any reservations about me teaching your child about this topic, please respond to me ASAP with an email or a letter.
Some students have not returned their science project signed letter. The project is due by April 23. Graded work will go home tomorrow.

Today's News

DMS students need to have their course selection cards in by this Friday. If you would like for your child to have any AP course, I would have to sign off on it. Spring picture money is due on Friday of this week. If you are interested in purchasing bags to help with Englewood's fund raiser, please let me know and I can send home the form. Hillcrest High School will have a fun carnival next week. More information about cost and times will go home next week. Chemical and Physical change test has been postponed for tomorrow. I plan to give the students the test first thing in the morning due to the possible interruption of precarious weather. Information about end of the year activities will go home by Friday.

Science Fair projects are due on April 23, the day after Earth Day!
Duncanville course selection cards will be going home today along with the general course information pamphlet. Spring Picture order forms went home. PTO program is tomorrow night. You may purchase books from the book fair between 5:45-6:30. You may see this week's vocabulary word to the left.
Chemical and physical change test will be this Wednesday.
I really need paper towels and wet wipes if you have any. I have a student who had a compromised immune system, and it would definitely benefit her if we could keep the desks in the classroom cleaned.

What's Going on Today?

Students and Parents,

I will be out of the classroom today due to additional training that I have to complete in the library media center. Please be on your best behavior. Things to remember: do your best on the vocabulary and grammar test. The science test should be easy since it is an exact replica of your study guide. Remember to dress comfortable for Friday's field trip. You will have another science test next Wednesday on chemical and physical changes so study your study guide that you received from me today. I love you all and good luck.
PS- I will be looking for some additional websites for chemical and physical changes.

*Acid: A solution that has an excess of H+ ions. It comes from the Latin word acidus that means "sharp" or "sour".

(Quiz Date- 10-25) Respiratory system- All the parts to the body that work together to breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide is the respiratory system

· Why do we breathe faster when we exercise? We need to supply our muscles with enough oxygen and to get rid of waste, carbon dioxide. Just as a burning log gives off heat and light energy, the cells in your body produce energy by breaking apart sugar. Cells need energy to perform chemical reactions and work properly. For energy production to take place, cells need oxygen.

· The diaphragm helps us move air in and out of the lungs. When we inhale, the diaphragm contracts or pushes downward and flattens, and when we exhale the diaphragm relaxes and returns to its dome shape.

· The epiglottis closes and shuts like a trapped door. It is located at the bottom of the throat and behind the trachea. When we swallow the epiglottis, it flips down automatically to keep food from going down the trachea.

· Bronchial tubes are located at the bottom of the trachea and branch off into many smaller branches.

· When we try to hold our breath, the brain detects the increase in carbon dioxide levels, signaling the lungs to inhale and exhale.

· The heart pumps blood through the veins, arteries, and the capillaries.

· It is responsible for bringing oxygen and nutrients to all the cells in the body from the respiratory and the digestive system.

· This is the system that filters or cleans the blood of waste.

· Parts of the Urinary system: Two Kidneys, ureter, bladder, and urethra.

· As blood flows through the kidneys, some water, sugars, salts, and the nitrogen wasted called urea are removed from the blood. The removed substances flow up and down long tubes inside the kidneys. As they do, the blood absorbs back all the sugars, salts, and water the body needs. The clean blood flows back out of the kidneys. The waste flows as urine into collecting ducts called ureters to be stored in the urinary bladder. The urinary bladder is a muscular bag that has a ring of muscles at the bottom that holds the bladder tightly shut. Urine filling the bladder stretches the bladder wall causing the wall nerves to signal the brain that the bladder should be emptied. Each day the kidneys produce about a quart of urine each day.

· About 70 percent of the human body is water. Blood and saliva are mostly water. There is water in cells and in between cells in tissue fluid.

· It is important for you to drink enough water each day to replace the water lost in urine, sweat, and in the water vapor given off when exhaling.

· Endocrine system consists of glands. A gland is and organ that sends chemical messengers called hormones to other parts of the body. Hormones are “dumped” into the blood and are carried to where they are needed. The body produces over 50 different types of hormones. Endocrine glands are throughout the body: Thyroid gland (in the neck)- controls the body’s metabolism or how the body provides energy. Adrenal Glands- (above the kidneys) are involved in the body’s reaction to dangerous or frightening situations. The pancreas- (in the abdomen) maintains blood sugar levels.

· The nervous system sends messages to the brain. The brain interprets the message and sends a new message to muscles throughout the body.

· 3 types of muscle tissue- Smooth, cardiac, skeletal. Smooth muscles are involuntary muscles because they contracts without your control. Cardiac Muscles- found only in the heart and are also involuntary. Skeletal Muscles- are voluntary muscles and are attached to the bone. They pull on the bone and move them. Skeletal muscles help shape the body and protect its internal organs.

· Blood cells are produced in the bone marrow, a jellylike substance inside the bones that is composed of, among other things, fat, blood, and special cells that turn into the various kinds of blood cells. In children, the marrow of most of the bones produces blood. But in adults, only the marrow of certain bones -- the spine, ribs, pelvis, and some others -- continues to make blood. Bone marrow that actively produces blood cells is called red marrow, and bone marrow that no longer produces blood cells is called yellow marrow.

· The different kinds of blood cells have different "life spans" -- red blood cells last about 120 days in the bloodstream; platelets about 10 days; and the various kinds of white blood cells can last anywhere from days to years.The body has a feedback system that tells it when to make new red blood cells. If bodily oxygen levels are low (as they would be if there are too few red blood cells circulating), the kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin, which stimulates the stem cells in the marrow to produce more red blood cells.

Respritory system-the respritory brings oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide from it. In humans the central organs are the lungs.

Skeletal system-Bones, ligaments, and tendons make up the skeletal system. The skeletal system provides shape and support, protects tissues and organs, ans letthe body move. It also make blood cells.

Musclular system-The muscular system is made up of smooth, cardica and skeletal muscles. Smooth muscles are involuntary muscles because they contract without your conscious control. They control breathing, blood pressure, and movement i nthe digestive system.

Digestive system- The digestive system breaks down food into simpler substances. The mouth, esophagus, liver, panceas, stomach, large and small intestines are all apart of the digestive system.

Circulatory system- The heart is the central organ inthe circulatory system that pumps blood throughout the body. It takes oxygen and nutrients to all the cells of an animals body, and it also takes carbon dioxide and wastes away from the cells.

Endocrine system- The endocrine system consist of glands, and organ that sends chemical messengers called hormones to other parts of the body.

Nervous system - Your nervous system is made up of specialized cells called neurons. The central organ is the brain, which interprets the messages, using over 100 billion neurons!

Excretory system - this system is responsible for ridding the body of wastes.
